Soul Tuition

Is the collaboration between Cliff Scott (Scott1200) & Orin Walters alongside Kaidi Tatham on keys.
The pair both met while working at Record shops opposite each other in West London’s Shepherds Bush.
Initially Scott was due to produce a couple trax for Orin’s MonkeyFunk label with with Partner from Mousetrap Records, Nick Prince. After quickly discovering they both shared the same mutual love for similar beats, musical & fashion styles, they eventually linked up at the infamous Richmond attic to start jamming & creating together.
Scott would pass over on a weekly, staying over most weekends working well into the hours jamming on tons of beats from his trusty SP1200 drum machine linked up to Orin’s S950 sampler. They’d spend hours sampling loads of MAW, Mood ll Swing and other kicks and snares etc, tons of Hip Hop samples as well hundreds of chords and other loops from 70’s soul and jazz records. The basis for numerous Bugz classics started off here with the fusing of two basic independant arrangements together. Scott would run through some of his demo beats on disk and Orin would sync his demo, stripping away certain or adding elements until it worked.

Bring me down is an exact example of this. Two different tracks programmed, running in sync with a sample from cameo I think… and then Kaidi dropping in the keys and bass to stitch everything together so neatly.

Just listening back to those beautiful chords Shocks laid down that hot summer of 97’ all now still give us goosebumps. Can still even smell the #1 too… Fun times. RIP Supa James Eade :)
